«How Ukrainians Began Speaking Ukrainian» — this is an educational film about the birth, development, decline, persecution, and flourishing of the Ukrainian language. About how it formed, changed, filled with borrowed words and formed its own neologisms. The film is divided into five historically significant periods: Kievan Rus', Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Hetmanate, Russian Empire, the Soviet era. Each era «spoke» in its own language, and here you will hear, for the first time, exactly how it sounded in different ages. The host, the renowned theatre and film actor Oleksiy Hnatkovskyi, will guide the film's viewer through the historical periods. Simply, accurately, at times with humor, he will tell how our language developed during the periods of creation, development, division, fierce wars and total bans.
