Safe Cities and Safe Public Spaces for Women and Girls

For 10 years, the UN Women Global Flagship Initiative "Safe Cities and Safe Public Spaces for Women and Girls" has been working with leading women's organizations, local and central authorities, UN agencies, and other partners to develop, implement, and evaluate comprehensive approaches to preventing and responding to sexual harassment in public spaces in various contexts. Ukraine joined the "Safe Cities and Safe Public Spaces for Women and Girls" program in 2018. Currently, seven cities and communities in Ukraine have already used the "Safe Cities and Safe Public Spaces for Women and Girls" methodology to develop urban programs.

In September 2022, the pilot initiative "Safe Spaces for Women and Girls" was launched. The initiative, launched by UN Women, is based on the Global Initiative "Safe Cities and Safe Public Spaces", which has been developing, implementing, and evaluating comprehensive approaches to combating sexual violence against women and girls in public spaces for over 10 years.

Together with women's rights organizations and other local partners, UN Women is working to adapt this initiative to the local context. The result was the creation of four safe spaces for women in the Zaporizhzhia and Ivano-Frankivsk regions. Developed based on assessments conducted by various women in each of the selected locations, the spaces are equipped according to the specific needs of their beneficiaries.
